There was no Spring in Berlin this year. There was a void, a gap – MA. There was a short illusion of early Spring in February, with a few warm sunny days replacing the icy cold weather. Then, nothing… as if nature, and the cycle of seasons, was waiting with us, the humans.
I’m not sure what we were waiting for: the vaccine, the end of the lockdown, more physical contact?
„Kinbaku needs an audience“ – this is one line that stayed in my mind after one of our first small gatherings in our home studio. With all those online events, the live sessions, and zoom meetings – in the end we were alone in our boxes. Tying with other people in the same room is a different thing. Therefore, I hope this magazine closes the cycle of purely virtual cooperation. I wish for us all that we can meet, exchange, laugh, research, discuss – tie.
Out of this void between the seasons, out of this promised, but never fulfilled spring, we created an issue fully dedicated to the orgiastic dance between masculine and feminine energy celebrated by so many cultures during this season. This issue became quite juicy – literally.
So follow me into the fairytale forest, full of mysterious creatures who might not be who they pretend to be. Be amazed by the craft and art: the drawings, the photography, the poetry, and the fiction we created for you. We brought together artists from inside and outside the scene once again, people we featured already and others who premiere.
We love them all. Follow their work – give them support. It is art that keeps us alive!
I hope you enjoy this magazine as much as I, as we, have enjoyed the making it. Your support keeps us growing. Today, as I’m writing this, all 250 pieces of the last issue are gone – to many countries in Europe, to places in North- and South America, to Israel, Australia, and South Africa. We are now also part of the collection of the Bishopsgate Institute, proudly sayin’.
Hence, success doesn’t come without struggle. For many of us “deviants“ – perverts, the room for free expression becomes tighter again. Censorship raises, not only in the USA. People who have contributed to this magazine have “lost“ their social media channels over the past season – part of their platform not only for art but also for income as “sex-workers“.
Censorship is nothing new – the history of Kinbaku (call it Shibari alike) is a history of censorship and how to overcome it. Therefore – we will focus our research over summer on this topic: Porn and Censorship.
Summer came suddenly. It is pressing hot under the roof. Time to exhale. Wherever you are – grab a cold drink, find a lush place in the shadow and indulge in our magazine. Flip through the pages, enjoy the art presented. We hope you find some beautiful feelings and peaceful joy in it.
